Root Canals

Do you react with fear when you hear you need a root canal? For most people, just the idea of a root canal can create anxiety and stress.

However, at A Family Dentist, our patients tell us a different story. Our doctors use advanced techniques, instruments, and state-of-the-art technology that makes a root canal today no more complicated than having a tooth filled. You can count on Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Anthony to provide a stress-free procedure that is easier and more comfortable than you ever imagined.

Why We Recommend a Root Canal

When decay or trauma penetrates the pulp chamber of a tooth and causes an infection, we need to perform a root canal. This part of your tooth is packed with pulp, tissue, blood vessels, and nerves that keep your tooth healthy. When a cavity or infection reaches this area, the first thing most patients notice is tooth sensitivity or intense pain.

When this occurs, the only option we have for treating the problem and providing relief is a root canal. If we don’t address the cause, your pain will worsen, and we will eventually need to remove the tooth.

Symptoms of an infected root canal include:

  • Severe pain, especially when you apply pressure
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that doesn’t subside
  • Darkening or discoloration of a tooth
  • Gum tenderness and swelling

What Happens During a Root Canal?

Unfortunately, root canals have a bad reputation not because the procedure itself is difficult, but because of the pain of the infection, which can be unbearable. But the reality is that a root canal doesn’t cause pain, it relieves it! As soon as we numb the tooth, you will experience a flood of relief.

During a root canal, our doctors use modern instruments to clear out the infection. Next, they cleanse and fill the tooth then seal it with a temporary filling. In most cases, our dentists will recommend adding a dental crown to strengthen and protect the tooth.

How Can You Help with My Anxiety?

We know a root canal is nothing to fear, but we understand that you may still feel anxious about it. Our team is sensitive to your needs and will do everything possible to help you feel confident about the procedure.

We provide blankets and pillows in our treatment rooms to help you get settled comfortably in the chair. Our doctors will explain what they will do during the procedure and what you can expect. They will be happy to answer any questions you have beforehand, and if there’s something we can do to improve your comfort, please don’t ever hesitate to let us know.
