We Help You Avoid Gum Disease with Preventive Care

The best way to ensure your excellent oral health is to maintain regularly scheduled appointments at our Sun City Center dental office. These visits include professional cleanings with our hygienist and dental exams twice a year or as recommended by our doctors.

When you see Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Anthony on a routine basis, we can help you enjoy a disease-free smile by addressing problems like periodontal disease as they occur, rather than waiting until it damages your gums.

However, preventing and treating gum disease doesn't only benefit your oral health – recent studies show a strong link between chronic oral inflammations like gum disease and your overall health. Bacteria in your mouth can move into your bloodstream and contribute to conditions like heart and respiratory disease, diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Periodontal Treatment Restores Gum Health

Periodontal disease is caused by plaque and tartar that clings to your teeth. No matter how well you brush and floss, you cannot remove tartar with at-home oral hygiene alone. And when tartar is not removed, it inflames your gums and results in an infection.

The only way to get rid of tartar is with a professional cleaning by a skilled dental hygienist. If we find evidence of gum disease, there are two treatments we recommend depending on its severity.

Gingivitis

The first and mildest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Our skilled hygienists typically treat gingivitis with a thorough dental cleaning and tips for getting the most from your oral hygiene routine at home. Your hygienist may also recommend using antimicrobial rinses to control plaque buildup.

Periodontitis

Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis and gradually destroys the structures that support your teeth. Without treatment, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.

Treating periodontitis involves a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. During scaling, your hygienist removes all of the bacteria-filled plaque and tartar that sits on your teeth above and below the gum line. Root planing involves smoothing out the exposed tooth roots to prevent bacteria from re-forming and provide a smooth surface to which your gums can reattach
